5 ingredients to avoid (and 5 to look for) for conscious cleaning

Have you ever really read the label of the detergent you use every day? Intense fragrances, rich foam, bright colors… but at what cost?
Often, behind complex formulas and hard-to-pronounce names, lie ingredients that can be harmful to your health, the environment, and aquatic ecosystems.

The good news is that there are safe, effective, and natural alternatives — and recognizing them is the first step toward making better choices.

5 ingredients to avoid in conventional detergents

  1. Triclosan
A common antibacterial agent, but dangerously controversial. It has been linked to hormonal disruption, is suspected of promoting bacterial resistance, and is toxic to aquatic wildlife. It’s persistent in the environment and ends up in wastewater after every wash.

  2. Phthalates
Often hidden under vague terms like “fragrance” or “parfum,” phthalates are used to fix synthetic scents. The problem? They are suspected endocrine disruptors that may harm the reproductive system and interfere with hormone development, especially in children. They’re also slow to degrade in nature.

  3. Sodium hypochlorite (bleach)
Used for disinfecting and whitening, sodium hypochlorite releases toxic and irritating vapors. It can react with other substances to form potentially carcinogenic compounds. Its aggressiveness impacts both surfaces and our skin and respiratory tract.

  4. Nonylphenol ethoxylates
Surfactants that are now banned in many European countries due to their high toxicity to aquatic organisms. They act as endocrine disruptors, accumulate in the environment, and alter ecosystem balances.

  5. Synthetic dyes
Added solely to make products more “appealing,” dyes serve no real purpose. Some may cause allergic reactions or skin irritation — and they end up as useless residues in our drains and oceans.

5 ingredients to look for in conscious detergents

  1. Citric Acid
A natural limescale remover derived from citrus fruits. It dissolves calcium and magnesium deposits, protects appliances and surfaces, balances the formula’s pH, and leaves no toxic residue. It’s 100% biodegradable and gentle on the skin.

  2. Cocamidopropyl Betaine
A gentle, balancing surfactant derived from coconut oil and glycine. It softens the formula and reduces harshness. Skin-friendly and suitable for sensitive skin, it biodegrades easily in nature.

  3. Cocamidopropylamine Oxide
Also derived from coconut oil, this secondary surfactant stabilizes foam and improves cleaning effectiveness, while remaining gentle enough for frequent use. It’s well-tolerated by skin and safe for aquatic environments.

  4. Natural fatty alcohols (e.g., Decyl, Lauryl Alcohol)
Extracted from renewable plant sources like coconut or corn, these help break down grease, dissolve ingredients, and soften the formula. They’re completely biodegradable, non-toxic, and improve product stability and safety.

  5. Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate
An ultra-gentle surfactant made from coconut oil and vegetable-based amino acids. Perfect for sensitive skin, babies, and allergy-prone users. It offers effective yet gentle cleaning, is skin-compatible, biodegradable, and environmentally safe.

How to read a label consciously

Don’t just trust words like “green,” “eco,” or “natural” on the packaging. To make a truly sustainable choice, look for:

  • A clear INCI list (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), even for detergents: recognizable ingredients are always a good sign.

  • The presence of genuine environmental certifications (e.g., Ecolabel, AIAB, etc.).

  • The company’s transparency: if you can’t find the full ingredient list, ask yourself why.

The VerdeAlpeko approach: natural mountain-made detergents

In our artisan lab, nestled in the mountains of the Aosta Valley, we craft detergents born out of respect — for nature, for people, and for ecosystem balance.

We use only safe, biodegradable, plant-based active ingredients like citric acid, percarbonate, pure essential oils, and gentle natural surfactants.
Most importantly, we completely exclude any toxic or controversial substances.
Our motto is simple: clean, yes — but with respect.

And our bottles are made to last

Not only do we use recycled R-PET to reduce environmental impact, but we’ve also eliminated the idea of single-use.
With our 3 kg Alpeko-Box refill containers, you can refill your bottles multiple times, saving up to 30% per kg while avoiding single-use plastic, transport emissions, and unnecessary packaging.

A financial saving that becomes an environmental habit — day after day.

In conclusion

Learning to read a label is a revolutionary act.
Choosing the right ingredients is an act of love: for your skin, for the environment, and for future generations.

Each VerdeAlpeko bottle carries a promise of transparency, effectiveness, and respect — because real cleanliness starts with what you choose not to use.

Choose consciously. Choose VerdeAlpeko.
